Chrismont excels, again, in the James Halliday Wine Companion!

August brings the highly anticipated release of the new edition James Halliday Australian Wine Companion – a comprehensive guide covering reviews and ratings for thousands of wines from around 1800 Australian wineries.

Keenly anticipated each year by winemakers, collectors and wine lovers, the Halliday Wine Companion is recognised as the industry benchmark for Australian wine.

Here are some of the Chrismont and La Zona highlights in the latest Ed. 2018 – a terrific mix of rich, savoury reds for the winters days remaining and some refreshing aromatic whites for the spring and summer days ahead !

La Zona King Valley Pinot Grigio 2016
Has very good concentration and varietal expression. Nashi pear, Granny Smith apple and Meyer lemon announce themselves on the bouquet, and follow suit on the long palate. The finish and aftertaste do nothing to upset the apple cart. 94 pts. Special value wine

La Zona King Valley Fiano 2016
Fiano doesn’t know when to give up the fight. Grow it anywhere, make it any how, and it will still come up with a textured palate of ever-changing fruit expression reflecting on or more of the outcomes of terroir, here with citrus, almond and touches of stone fruit. 94 pts. Special value wine

Chrismont King Valley Pinot Gris 2015
It’s not just the extra year in bottle, for this has an added degree of texture, some chalky acidity and savoury elements – there’s no oak, but you can’t have it and the same level of fruit intensity and spiralling fruit. 93 pts. Special value wine

La Zona King Valley Rosato 2016
A blend of sangiovese and tempranillo. Pale, bright crimson; a cherry blossom bouquet, then a super-crisp palate with red and sour cherries and cherry pips driving the long, dry and refreshing palate. 90 pts. Special value wine

La Zona King Valley Barbera 2015
Fermented on skins for 7 days, matured for 12 months in new and used French barriques. Medium crimson-purple; interesting wine, with a savoury/spicy mix of blackberry and plum riding on a bed of rounded tannins, the length impressive. 93 pts. Special value wine

La Zona King Valley Sangiovese 2015
Fermented and macerated on skins, matured for 15 months in new and used French barriques. Bright, clear crimson; fresh-picked red and dark cherries rule the roost until the aftertaste when the tannins emerge from their hiding place as only sangiovese can. Chrismont does well with the variety. 93 pts. Special value wine

La Zona King Valley Sagrantino 2015
Chrismont has managed to do the near impossible: taking the bitterness out of the tannins of sagrantino without emasculating it in the process. This ends up as a wine screaming for wild boar and such like. 93 pts
